My highly eventful Disneyland trip
03.29.07 (8:47 pm) [edit]
I'll try and keep this short:
Drove down to Disneyland on Monday, got an early start, did not get lost, made great time. We stayed at the hotel I have stayed at many many times a child (under a new, recognizable brand name, but has the same decoration). We walked to Downtown Disney and the hotels with in-laws, window-shopped and ate at the Rainforest Cafe. It was cold and windy but we saw fireworks on walk back.
Got an early start Tuesday. The ticket lady gave us two day resident passes at the same prices as one day non-resident passes.
It was fun going with people who had never been before. We rode almost everything worth riding by about 6:00. We watched the parade. We ate Mexican food, mint juleps, and pineapple whips. We shopped. It rained some. It was cold and windy; canceled fireworks. Rode best shortish lined rides twice (Small World, Haunted Mansion, Pirates, and Indiana Jones). New Pirates with Pirates characters is fun (esp. the new end).
Bought a birthday present for Dad, "Year of a Million Dreams" Donald, 40th Anniversary Pirates shirt (which is different than all the other pirate shits with variations on the movie logo because they're about the original ride that was cool before there was a movie), and a castle shirt.
Wednesday got an early start for our surprise day in California Adventure. My car battery was dead. When we tried to jump it it would not hold a charge. When it seemed to hold a charge temporarily, nothing electrical (brake lights, turn signals, headlights) worked. Turned out I had a blown fuse. My step-father-in-law drove all over Orange County looking for a fuse. I was very sad and depressed. After going to 4 stores, finally found a fuse.
Three hours later, we were on the way to California Adventure. Rode almost everything worth riding. Got a later start going home than originally planned (as one might guess).
Re-jumped my car after CA Adventure "Check Engine Soon" light, no radio, but car runs/lights on. Drove through LA, did not get lost and on 101 like my parents always do. Jeremy drove 1/2 way home, I slept some.
Got home at 1:00 and hamster had escaped through loose area between cage and cage top, seemingly earlier that evening. Found her surprisingly quickly (alive) at the bottom of a couch cushion. There was very faint rustling and a moving lump at the bottom of the pillow case.
(Although not technically part of my Disney trip)
Got an early start for work Thursday. Left 1/2 hour ahead of time. Street I needed to take to work was closed, got caught in terrible traffic, couldn't get to work, had to go way the hell around to get there, and was 5 minutes late. As it turned out, a woman (probably drunk) wrapped her car around a utility pole at about 100 mph at nearly 3 in the morning. She died an hour later in the hospital. The power situation was worsened when a truck didn't see the down lines and clipped them. Trader Joe's up the street closed all day, no power. Hopefully fixed by tomorrow.

UCLA & Blockbuster Video (two unrelated things)
03.24.07 (11:32 pm) [edit]
Could somebody please explain to me how it came to pass that UCLA was playing at the San Jose arena?
Does UCLA not have a venue where its team plays? Or a basketball court? Or a stadium? Or a theater? Or a quad?
Does Los Angeles not have a stadium? Or an arena with some ridiculous naming rights thing also owned by Clear Channel? Like maybe 4 or 5 of them?
Blockbuster Video deserves whatever fate befalls them. Aside from the fact that after reading the Wikipedia article about them, I think they, like Wal-Mart with music, censor/purposely leave out either explicit, older, or lesser known movies thereby upholding the status quo of big current Hollywood crap, their customer service sucks.
First off, having no parking, bad for business.
Second, if one is going to reorganize their stock, one should do so after business hours because when the comedy section is missing, and you ask where it is, and they point to semi-organized stacks on the floor in the corner, where one can't even find the letters their movie begins with and other customers are playing Go Fish with each other (Did you see 50 First Dates in there?) this is not good for business.
The last thing that is not good for business is saying, "If you haven't rented from us in two months, you have to fill out a new application." This does not make people happy. And it's a little surprising that in glorious technological age where Tom can be friends with everyone in Pakistan (which is up from the last time I checked when he was only friends with everyone in the Philippines) and all one really needs is the almighty plastic that Blockbuster refuses to hold on to someone's records for more than 2 months.
Blockbuster deserves to go down in flames.

Irish for a day
03.17.07 (6:23 pm) [edit]
I saw somebody buying some cocktail napkins that said, "Irish for a day" on them. This got me thinking. It's easy to be Irish for a day on some random day in March when it could be stormy or sunny. Try being Irish on some random day in July then see how much fun it is.
If corned beef and cabbage is so great, why does no one eat it any other day of the year? Culture is so weird like that. How everyone, Irish or whatever, does the same thing because they sorta feel they should.

Alcatraz
03.15.07 (12:25 pm) [edit]
|
What is the deal with Alcatraz? That is, why do people who have never been to California assume it's something worth seeing? It's not. It's an old, boring, windy, depressing cement place. There is plenty of wonderful, pretty, enriching, touristy things to do in San Francisco. But everyone who comes is like, "Wow! We've got to go to Alcatraz!" No, you really don't. It takes up a lot of time and money better spent anywhere else, even Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 are better than Alcatraz. If I was going to spend the time and money, I would rather take a bay cruise.

Thought for the moment
03.13.07 (10:27 am) [edit]
In two weeks from this moment I will be in Disneyland with my in-laws!
That's one of the happier thoughts in my head right now...in fact, that's the happiest.
The next happiest is that I am taking a drawing field trip to Santa Cruz/Capitola today. (I've just got to get my arse in gear).
This is probably the third or fourth happiest:
"Dessert has a well-known liberal bias."
And all the other thoughts just kinda go down hill from there...
Where are all the pissed off song writers? The Country Joes, the Barry Mcguires, the John Lennons? I guess Neil Young and John Mellencamp are still fighting the good fight somewhat. But where are the ones appealing to these up-and-coming generations? And there is plenty to be pissed about.
If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention.

Thought for the moment
03.11.07 (11:22 pm) [edit]
My brain hurts and I am trying very hard not to care about grades...
That is care, but realize they aren't the be-all end-all of even my current existence.
Moving has been a very time consuming hobby.

Wild Hogs
03.07.07 (11:21 pm) [edit]
I'm not sure how I feel about the movie. In general, I think I like John Travolta and William H. Macy (the latter is an especially good actor).
The best thing that comes to mind about it is that it had an awesome soundtrack. If I didn't already have/have access to most of those songs, I'd buy it.
Edit: There was one thing I did notice that i thought was...interesting. I didn't see much in the way of product placement in the film (with the exception of Harley, Orange County Choppers and maybe Bud Light). However, one of the characters is a nerdy computer programmer who right before the trip gets a tattoo on his deltoid of the old school, eight-color Apple logo.
This is interesting because the film is distributed by Touchstone, which owned by Disney. And who is Disney's biggest shareholder since they acquired Pixar for an ungodly amount of money? That's right! Steve Jobs!
In the end, I think the movie was fairly predictable, and a little boring (except the soundtrack which sounded great on those theater speakers).

If you don't like Chuck Berry, you are a terrorist who abhors our sweet, sweet freedom.
Same goes with Elvis.
I got my first iPod for my birthday. My dad loaded up with songs to see if it worked. Now I have to go through and take out all the Motown and hokey 50's (not Elvis or Chuck Berry who are harder rockers than some of the rockers on rock stations), and load it up with more AC/DC and Alice Cooper.
So far, I'm on the G's
Current Mood:OK
What's on: George Thorogood - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer
How the hell do you control the volume on this thing?! Much as I love Joan Jett at top volume....
It's hard not to listen to the Immigrant Song and headbang.

Thought(s) for the day
03.05.07 (10:32 am) [edit]
I love this nice weather as much as anyone. This happens every year; we get a bout of really nice weather and winter will come back with a vengeance towards the middle-end of March.
I almost wish it didn't do this. It makes me all horny for summer.
Not to worry. It will be miserable soon enough.
The apartment is nice, better than our last in a lot of ways. However, the walls are pretty thin. And someone nearby seems to have a band...
1st class canceled!
Current Mood: pretty good
