04.26.07 (10:22 am)   [edit]
81 down, 19 to go. I might actually just finish this sketchbook before the end of the semester.

Ramblings about the SJSU art teachers and how they make the fact that they aren't teaching well enough that people have to fail 4 times which is somehow entirely the students' fault go here.

I think there is someone else who has failed as many times as me. I had a dream about him last night. That proves that the system is not even 99% solid...

Comics & Copies
04.25.07 (8:49 pm)   [edit]
Mostly for my reference. However, if I ever get a real website together, this is stuff my loyal readers (all three of you) can look forward to. Unfortunately, a lot of it will be old news, if it ever was news to begin with.

I have 59 copies done, so I only have 41 left to do.

Lite Brite: The new threat to National Security
A Valentine from Space Case Lisa Nowak
Raised Rent thanks to minimum wage
The true story of how extreme evangelical Pastor Ted Haggard became completely heterosexual in a mere three weeks
The Earth Day Edition of every magazine
How the Emperor's New Clothes really goes
A non-binding resolution
Punk Typographers
Alberto "Tight Lips" Gonzales
Virginia Tech & Abortions

As soon as I finish those 49 drawings, this is my next project.
I wish coffee tasted better.

APE Observations
04.22.07 (9:52 pm)   [edit]
So I went to the Alternative Press Expo yesterday. Actually first I walked around the Embarcadero, drew some of the sculptures thereon, found a Farmer's Market near the Ferry Building, got pissed off with the Muni, and ended up walking 2 and a half miles from the Ferry Building to the APE venue.

I got there, paid and wandered. The first guy I met was actually Stephen Silver whose works include Kim Possible, Danny Phantom and The Fairly Odd Parents. "Nice figure drawing. Work bigger. Keep at it." Cool guy.

I was a little surprised that most of the people were selling comics that were printed in black and white on a folded 1/2 sheet of 8.5X11 paper. My one book that I did for school last year is on a full 8.5X11, and comb bound which it was pointed out to me isn't very cost effective. (Unless you can get your own binding machine, or free access to one). And a lot of very tiny buttons. But work ranging from paintings to tiny buttons.

So, I met the infamous Cartoonists With Attitude (except for Jen Sorenson and Brian McFaden). I talked to them all individually. None of them are not making a primary living at their work (something I never thought about but good to know) and they are all only in a few publications. And none all but one have a heavy art training. I don't think a lot of people at the whole expo had a lot of art training (I asked). It was more like, "I've been drawing all my life. I took a few art classes in college. But I majored in (anything but art)." Basically, "Do it, and get out there" was their biggest advice.
Ted Rall had the best advice for anyone who might in any way want to be an artist, Have as many interesting life experiences as possible because it makes you and your subsequent work interesting because of a different perspective which filters through your work.

So, it was interesting. I'm still not entirely sure how much actual talent there was at the event. But it was educational, and talking to the Cartoonists With Attitude was inspiring.

So, I'm at kinda this point where is it worth it to go on with this art thing or whatever? I guess the answer is, if I want to make money doing something I like. But I might be able to do both. Do a strip on the side in addition to moving little objects a fraction of an inch at a time (also something one does not make money off of initially).

I think only a few people could probably live off of their comic strips. But I am still inspired to get a website and put stuff up weekly...hmmm...

Stuff is weird now.

Alternative Press Expo
04.20.07 (9:21 pm)   [edit]
I'm going to the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco tomorrow! I'm going to meet some of my favorite left wing cartoonists. Idiot Box, Bob the Angry Flower, Minimum Security, Some Guy With a Website, Boiling Point and How to Be Happy will be there. Unfortunately, not Big Fat Whale or Slowpoke (Slowpoke is one of my favorites out of the whole group. I wrote her a letter once. She answered. Cartoonists are some of the coolest people in that way).

That sounds like a Battle of the Bands line-up. "On stage 1, Bob the Angry Flower! On Stage 2, Idiot Box!"

I'm excited so you should be (for me) too. I am trying (and failing) desparately to get some comic stuff together so they can tell me just how lame I am but keep trying and don't get discouraged.

I'm really sick of looking at Ted Haggard and whatizdouchebag from 700 Clubs

A little thing I Photoshopped in class when I was bored:

Why are there no cute directors? Rhetorical question. The answer is because many of them are very very talented but have a face that was meant to be behind a camera. George Clooney doesn't count, and neither does any other actor who on a whim decides to direct (but it still applies to some who do).

Shooting Season
04.18.07 (9:52 am)   [edit]
Tasteless subject, I know.
But it's true.

So many of the campus shootings happen right around the end of the school year with a month and a half, two months left. These are the ones where the disturbed, overly quiet, grossly unpopular, and often very smark kids/students/people just snap. And rightfully so.

Teachers have piled it on all damn year, telling you all the while how you aren't good enough, how you won't be even good enough anytime in the near future. But they won't tell you why. Just, "No, sorry." Are we there yet? No. Are we there yet? No. Are we there yet? No. When are we going to fucking be there?! When we get there.
That's it. No more information. At least when I was on a driving trip and we asked my dad that, he handed us a map and said, "Here, figure it out." I don't even get that.

They dangle this thing called a grade in front of you and act like it's the most important thing in the world when in reality it doesn't mean shit, but you do it anyway. And even after you've spent time, money, and ignored sleep for a day or two, it's still not good enough. Despite that you put more into a project than most students, "This thing is wrong. B."

Fuck you, and fuck your B, Bitch! To fix the thing would fuck up the eye level, you sugary skinny snatch! How about I just Photoshop some shit together in about two hours like all these other little pricks? Would that have been better?!

How about, I break your skinny little neck, take a picture of that, and turn it in?

But it's just a grade. This class I'm in. I've learned it's not about actually learning anything. It's about jumping through the little hoop and getting the fucking grade, or the check mark (or check +).

Like a seal; do the trick, throw a fish at it. Except a grade isn't anything. You can't take in all your A's down the recycling center and get cash for them. You can't live or nourish yourself off of them. You can't even hang them on your wall or stick them in your DVD player to be admired that way. It is just some invisible thing that is supposed to mean something.

Of course, as everyone knows, after the teachers have been piling it on all year, like the students, they too have wait till the last minute. The put all the big projects at end. That way, when you are at the breaking point, it's not just a straw that breaks the camel's back, it's another load bricks.

Man, stuff sucks.

I think the most sadistic part about all this is that we pay to have this done to us. Teachers and people especially at the more menial administrative level often forget that they are hired by us.

In conclusion, it's no wonder this is the time of year when students go crazy. It's because of all the bullshit that has been piled on us throughout the year.

Things in my desk
04.15.07 (9:03 am)   [edit]
It's strange when you find a Spanish flash card you made in either your freshman or sophomore year of high school in your desk. Yet you can't find some very important wedding stuff...(gulp!).
I hated making flash cards. I never used them. But every language teacher I've ever had (in high school) used them like they were the thing that made all the difference.

I hope that stuff is around here somewhere...

American Airlines for women by chauvinists
04.12.07 (9:59 am)   [edit]

Thank god! A pretty, and simple site for us pretty li'l women thaangs who don' know nothin' about no big fancy airline reservations. We can't can't handle all that extra stuff on a big ol' website. I mean an advanced search for women? We can't even handle what time during the day we might want to leave! But golly, it is pretty! It could use more flowers though.

No, sadly this is not a joke.

Graduation
04.09.07 (9:31 pm)   [edit]
Spring 2010.

God, that's depressing.

It seems these last few weeks there has been an onslaught of people saying, "So, how much longer till you're done with school?"
I need a snappy comeback for this.
Something like when someone asks when/why with kids and you say, "Well after I saw what having kids did to your body..."

But there it is, 2010. Three more ghastly years of cut grocery hours, trying to afford to live and potentially moving 3 more times (I average about one move a year), and this is all if I actually do pass the review next Fall and if I keep suppressing the voice that says, "Don't shoot today."

A project in statistics
04.09.07 (11:33 am)   [edit]
13 print outs, 6 movies, 69 photographs, $30, 16 scans, 6 hours preparation/research, 14 hours on the actual project (all of them last nightr for obvious reasons), 14 downloaded pictures, 3 library books, 16 files, a very inconvinient broken-down car problem that saved me from work a half hour early but took me away from this for an hour, and one decapitated and de-nosed Mickey Mouse figurine to make this:

Behold, my awesomeness. I actually don't know if this is even good or not. I think the original is better. I had better get an A. I am one of the best students in that class because it's all students that have barely started the animation program unlike me who has been through it all up to the point where I repeatedly bang my head against a glass.

I am so going to fall asleep during the crits. I usually do even when I haven't been up all night.

Current mOood:i kinda feel like this

All-Nighter
04.09.07 (2:38 am)   [edit]
Aaah, the first all-nighter of the semester.

My eyes hurt from so cross hatching.

I've got to try not to be precious about this project (or any for that matter). However, I think I see this assignment more as an opportunity than most of the other students.

I need a break. What shall I watch next?

Current Mood:get focused before I have to do it all over again.

And I need to get some matte board first thing, dammit.

Pirate State of mind
04.08.07 (8:12 pm)   [edit]
Since I'm kinda studying this right now, that makes me an expert. That said...

I am really tired of this becoming more and more cliche image:

All anyone knows it means is "pirate." What people don't know is that famous pirates had their own unique "Jolly Roger" flag designs. This particular pirate was kinda lame compared to some, and is more known for the company he kept.

I want to see more diverse pirate flags like Blackbeard's or one of the real Dread Pirate Robert's flags. Then maybe you won't seem like such a posuer for liking pirates because they are cool right now.

Incidentally, I'm not a huge pirate person, just one of my favorite historical figures happens to be a pirate.

And I know this is ironic considering my last post. However, I would like to point out that one of my favorite celebrities who I thought was also cool before he became associated with pirates. (That would be the one that's not Johnny Depp or Minime).

And now, for an Easter Tradition...
Watching Life of Brian.

Something to Smile About
04.07.07 (8:17 pm)   [edit]
I promised myself I wouldn't be upset if I got my hours cut again...

I'm not quite as depressed as I was.

I personally cannot wait for this movie to come out, mostly because of the men in this picture, especially the one on the right:

the man who claims to have snorted his own dad...
Wow, I hope someone hid them from him and replaced them with chocolate milk mix...
damn South Park.
