| Penis Envy, and Papayas |
| 09.14.07 (9:49 pm) [edit] |
I read a blog about movie posters. Their latest post features The Brave One poster. As indirectly suggested by this post, it isn't too hard to picture Jodie Foster has a penis. The whole discussion on powerful women either being butch or bitches and therefore acting like men or whatever is a subject I don't want to get into.
What I do wonder is why are not more female reproductive areas suggested movie advertising? (Stick with me on this). The posters for Mr. Woodcock and Balls of Fury that imply male genitalia, as do Duce Bigalow, Men in Black, and even (accidentally!*)The Little Mermaid.
Where are the movie posters with female reproductive whatever on them? Lisence to Wed is the only example I can find in poster art. There are a few print ads out there that imply different things. There is a container of papaya juice label out there that I think always looks just a little wrong, although it's hard to a papaya not to look dirty like something else:

I just found out that according to Urban Dictionary, papaya is Cuban/Caribbean slang for female genitalia.
But why don't women appear in a garden of weird pink flowers? Or why aren't there any oddly shaped flames on candles? Or why aren't there more papayas on movie posters or advertising in general?
Time to get off my feminist high horse and paint...
*I have to believe the Mermaid incident is truly accidental because the story, and main character, etc. appeals to girls. Unlike the above stories which are for and about men, or in the case of Brave One a powerful woman. There is no point in it for Little Mermaid because it's about a girl and therefore only appreciated by girls.** And she is not a strong girl at that; Little Mermaid is one of the most misogynistic fairy tales out there.
**There is a very stupid mindset in our culture that to be female is only ok if you are female and sometimes not even then. For example to be a "Girly-man;" something "ballsy" people are not. It is unfortunate that most men/boys will not willingly see movies starring primarily women/girls, but the opposite is not true. If Harry Potter had been written as a female character the series would not be nearly as popular...right now (insert joke about magic wands here). I say right now because two of the most popular fantasy characters of all time, Dorothy and Alice, are female. This is why there has to be a genre called "chick flicks" and for a man to admit he went to one is to admit that he is gay or whipped (preferably the latter). And I could go on and on...
